William Henry Scott, a native of Athens County and educated at Ohio University, Dr. Scott came to the presidency at age 32 from his professorship of philosophy at the University, the first alumnus to attain the presidency. He was an ordained Methodist minister. Active in seeking direct financial support from the state legislature, he obtained funds to refurbish the buildings, to build a chapel building, and to improve the grounds. William Henry Scott (WHS) (September 1, 1840 - January 11, 1937) was born in Athens, Ohio. He became the seventh president of Ohio University (1872-1883) and was the first Ohio University alumnus to attain the presidency. After leaving Ohio University, WHS became the third president of Ohio State University (1883-1895). In addition to being a professor of philosophy, WHS was also an ordained Methodist Minister.
